TAG (TC 154) N 264
Date: 1999-06-16

ISO TC 154 U.S. TAG
Meeting Minutes - June 8, 1999
Town & Country Resort & Convention Center, San Diego, California

1. Call to Order and Introductions

Mr. Klaus-Dieter Naujok, taking the place of Vice Chair Ms. Mary K. Blantz, called the meeting to order at 6:05 p.m. A quorum was called for and confirmed. Self-introductions were made.

2. Approval of Agenda

The agenda for the meeting was approved as augmented with one addition as the last order of business under New Business:

Contributions and attendees for November 11-12, 1999 TC 154 meeting in New Orleans.

3.  Approval of Minutes

Minutes of the February 9, 1999, U.S. TAG meeting in Dallas, Texas, were unanimously approved as presented.

4.  New Business

    4.1 Candidates for Membership

One candidate has applied for membership in the U.S. TAG. It was confirmed that this individual has met the membership requirements. The approved applicant will become a voting member for this meeting.

4.1.1 A motion was made and seconded to approve the application for membership for William J. Kammerer. The motion was unanimously approved.

    4.2 FDIS 9735-7

A motion was made and seconded to approve ISO/FDIS 9735-7 Electronic data interchange for administration, commerce and transport (EDIFACT) -- Application level syntax rules (Syntax version number: 4) -- Part 7: Security rules for batch EDI (confidentiality).

ACTION: The TC 154 Secretariat must advise ANSI to vote yes with no comment on FDIS 9735-7.

    4.3 BSR - Rules, Guidelines and Methodology (ISO/CD 16668)

A motion was made and seconded to disapprove the circulation of the draft as a DIS for the following reasons:

4.3.1 It is the belief of the U.S. that the Basic Semantic Register is based on technologies that have been overcome over time by new generations of object-oriented EDI and it therefore no longer serves a purpose.

4.3.2 Due to the fact that alignment between the X12 and EDIFACT codes has already been done, the BSR is no longer needed.

4.3.3 The implementation contained in the BSR includes erroneous, non-current U.S. standard data elements.

4.4 CEN/ISSS recommendations relative to XML

Recommendation 10, pertaining to a management body being set up to manage the main business semantics repository, was met with strong objections. It was made clear that this should not be a role of the ISO and that recommendations such as these that put work into the BSR should not be adopted. Furthermore, the other recommendations, particularly 10, are not standard development activities. These recommendations exacerbate the role of the BSR, which was objected to in document ISO/CD 16668.

4.5 TC 154 Plenary meeting in New Orleans

There currently is no agenda prepared for this meeting. Ms. Sandra Paul expressed interest in participating at this plenary meeting.

[Ed. NOTE: Subsequently, it was learned that the ISO TC 154 plenary would not be held in New Orleans.]
